Karen Grimstead is an Australian abstract artist whose work is informed by the experience of flight and the shifting perspectives it offers.
Observing the contrasting landscapes of Australia, England and France from above, she draws on aerial viewpoints as a point of departure. Cartographic patterns, contours and spatial divisions are translated into layered compositions that move beyond representation into layered compositions that move beyond representation into more atmospheric, ambiguous terrains.
Working between studios in Perth, Western Australia and Petworth, England, Karen develops paintings that prioritise sensory sensitivity over description. Her practice explores the tension between structure and disruption - between dynamic movement and quiet stillness - allowing each work to hold a sense of visual equilibrium while remaining open and unresolved.
Subtle variations in colour and composition respond to changing conditions of light, altitude, season and distance. These elements are not recorded directly, but reinterpreted through an intuitive process that reflects an internal, rather than literal, landscape. The paintings suggest journeys through expansive and shifting spaces - both geographical and psychological - inviting a contemplative and immersive way of seeing.
